DAR is a powerful command-line tool for comprehensive data backup and archiving. It excels in handling all UNIX inode types, preserving hard links, sparse files, Extended Attributes like macOS file forks and Linux ACLs, and Filesystem Specific Attributes. Its intelligent selective compression avoids re-compressing already compressed files, saving time and space. Features include strong encryption, archive splitting, on-the-fly hashing, and support for differential backups with binary deltas. DAR creates an internal catalog, enabling incredibly fast restoration of individual files from massive, sliced, and encrypted archives, even when stored remotely via FTP or SFTP, by fetching only the necessary data.
